Woody LaBounty – SF Heritage

Wednesday, August 26, 2020

On August 26, Woody LaBounty of SF Heritage entertained SHARP members and guests  via ZOOM with a rundown on what SF Heritage does. The group is involved with saving both the architectural assets of the city and businesses affecting what makes the City special.

The group first came into action in the 70’s as old Victorian houses were being destroyed to make space for new construction in the Western Additions. They managed to save 12 of these unique buildings from demolition. They have taken action on saving some of the older classic downtown buildings in the Union Square area. Sometimes it may be as simple of saving a unique facade while the interior is rebuilt.

They are also involved in saving cultural items like the UCSF Bernard Zakheim murals and street art murals in the Mission District.

Their latest project(s) is to bring attention to heritage buildings and businesses in the city’s less visible neighborhoods, like the Excelsior, Parkside, and Marina districts.

The organization was given a gift of the Hass-Lilienthal house which serves as a museum in addition to housing  their offices and is available for tours, events and activities. They also own the Doolan Larson building at the corner of Haight and Ashbury Sts.
