Vern graduated from Cal Berkeley in 1942 and served in the Army in Japan and the Phillippines during World War II. He worked for 39 years as an electrical engineer for CalTrans on Van Ness Avenue, where he met his wife, Betty, who also worked there and who survives him. They were married in 1949. Vern was an avid railroad enthusiast with a lifelong passion for trains. In SHARP, Vern took a particular interest in the unsafe conditions for pedestrians on 19th Avenue. Though Vern was battling cancer for years, he and Betty continued to attend meetings. We last saw him at SHARP at our December 2013 lunch, where he was his usual vivacious self and where the photo of him was taken. SHARP salutes Vern Waight for his long and steadfast service to our club.
