Harold Gilliam

Harold Gilliam died on December 14, 2016, at age 98.  He was a groundbreaking environmental journalist, accomplished author, dedicated naturalist, gracious man, and faithful member of SHARP. With his reporting and columns, he as much as anyone created environmental journalism in the Bay Area.

The photo was taken in 2013 when we honored Harold as our Local Hero.  Veteran Chronicle reporter Carl Nolte introduced Harold that day at SHARP.  The introduction was so full of praise that Harold’s first words in response to Carl were, “I’ll write your obituary if you’ll write mine.”  Carl has kept his part of the bargain: here is his obituary for Harold in the Chronicle.

In 2011, Bay Nature magazine published a summary of Harold’s work followed by an interview in which Harold offered his memories and reflections.
