Christmas Lunch and Local Hero Awards

Sunday, December 29, 2013

The turkey was scrumptious, the members’ side dishes spectacular, and the honorees best of all. Eric McHuron earned SHARP’s Local Hero award for his instrumental work in helping us rebuild our building.  Harold Gilliam got our Local Hero award for his pioneering journalism covering the Bay Area environmental movement and for his many books about the Bay Area environment.  Chronicle reporter and columnist Carl Nolte introduced Harold with a glowing description of his work.  After that, Harold began his remarks by telling Carl, “I’ll write your obituary if you’ll write mine.” Special thanks to John Barry for organizing and em-ceeing (said Jack to Harold, “please say a few thousand words” ) and to May Pon for tirelessly commanding the kitchen.
